Challenge 007: Alternate Realities
Time and again The Powers That Be have given us glimpses of the what ifs and the could have beens in the life and times of one Daniel Jackson. The Quantum Mirror showed us worlds where Daniel never joined the SGC, then “Ripple Effect” showed us a glut of Daniel’s who did. And of course, there’s the time traveling fun of “Mobius” where there IS no Stargate Program and an adorkable Daniel is left to teaching English in Adult Ed.
Between all these points are endless possibilities in between for a Daniel Jackson to find himself in. Is there a Daniel who loves sports? Hates archeology? Drives fast cars, builds homes with Jimmy Carter, works in showbiz? This week’s theme is the always popular, rarely dull “AU”. Have fun!

“Sir.” Carter’s voice burst from the radio on his shoulder. “Barometric pressure’s dropped another fifteen points. I don’t think it’s just a ‘chance’ of rain anymore. And the wind’s really picking up out here.”
Daniel thumbed the comm. “Understood, Major. You and Teal’c pack it up, meet us back at the gate.”
Sam’s confirmation was crisp and already in motion. Which just left Jack.
“Jack. You heard her, let’s go.” But he knew it wouldn’t be that easy. It was never so easy.
“Yeah, just— just another second.” The archeologist scribbled faster, silver head bent.
“Jack, you said it yourself: there was evidence of flooding down here. Now unless you brought your SCUBA gear, we’ve got to head back.”
With a frustrated huff, Jack threw an eyebrow jigging glare over his shoulder at the Colonel. Daniel only had a bland quirk of his mouth and a tilt of his chin as a rejoinder.
“Daniel, this—!”
“Jack!” The single syllable was infused with both indulgent affection and a quickly diminishing amount of patience. “We’ll come back.” Because a little bribery never hurt. Daniel folded his arms over the butt-end of his P90, a holding pattern that said he’d rather be moving out already.
“Fine, fine, fine,” Jack muttered darkly, gathering the assortment of books and notebooks scattered up and down the mural. Once he had everything packed back up, he handed the bag to Daniel and turned around expectantly. Obligingly, Daniel helped set it back onto his vest, fingers working the alice clips with long practice.
“You know, I wouldn’t rush you if I was standing where you were. You just can’t rush this kind of stuff.”
“I’m sure you wouldn’t, Doctor O’Neill.” Daniel reached out and cupped the back of the man’s neck. It served well as a steering mechanism and a display of approval. Moving. Moving was good. “I’m sure you wouldn’t.”
