His reflection looked tired. “Well, that’s because I am tired.”
Tugging his tie into place one last time, George Hammond left his office and marched himself towards the surface. A car would be waiting for him, and from there a plane to take him to D.C. He was presenting his final assessment to the President and the Joint Chiefs. Yes, this could have been done on the phone, but.
But SG-1 deserved more, George had concluded. It had now been two months since the SGC has failed to reestablish contact with P2X-524 or SG-1. He would give his report in person, in uniform, and with the full weight of it on his shoulders.
A full analysis of the MALPs telemetry showed the two Jaffa near the DHD having the panel open and several connection ports between it and some hand held device. While what they were doing exactly would forever remain a mystery, the various scientists assigned to the base were able to conclude the initial failure of chevron seven to engage the first time - when George still had had the time to call them back down the ramp - was the simple mater of another wormhole already engaged on the other side. Already programmers were working to create a system to detect such things in the future. But it was all a little too much too late for George’s conscious.
SG-1 had been declared MIA after two weeks, but now it was time to close out the report.
If SG-1 was dead, then they deserved a Hero’s funeral. If they’d simply been captured, then he felt he wasn’t being unrealistic in staying hopeful. And if it was anything between those two… Hammond simply knew he’d tried everything he could, that his people here had tried everything they could, and now it was up to Jack to get them home if that was still possible.
Collecting his cap under his arm, he thought again about retirement. If SG-1 couldn’t find a way home — if Doctor Jackson wasn’t there to infuse the work with his passion, or Captain Carter in the labs gleaning an understanding of the very universe, Teal’c’s quiet strength buoying them all beyond their limits or Jack’s wry but steady guidance….
George didn’t know if he really wanted to be a part of a Stargate Command that didn’t have those things.
